2. Formulate your thesis statement (your stance and viewpoint claim) based upon your response and focus to the following prompt questions:
What is the overall thesis statement of this documentary? |What is the documentary’s overall purpose?| |What does the film hope to achieve?|
Consider these directional interrogatives as ways to focus your analyses of the key claims and arguments in the documentary film:
What are the key or major arguments in the documentary?
How does the film support these key or major arguments–with what kinds of EVIDENCE? (Specify the types of evidence used).
Is the evidence used credible and reliable? If it is reliable and credible, specify why it is so. If not, describe why it is not reliable and credible.
In your critical opinion, do you believe the film uses clear, understandable, and persuasive argumentative claims backed with effective evidence? Give specific reasons supporting your affirmative or negative answer to this question.
Does the film use persuasive fallacies in its arguments? Identify these as key aspects to use in your overall critique of the film.
How, and in what ways, does the film use the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, pathos, and kairos? View this helpful video on the rhetorical appeals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzL75zZ2tiQ

.
Does the film achieve its objective to convince its audience about what you consider is its intended purpose and message(s)?
*Requirement: your analytical commentary must include the critical perspectives from another source (cited from a film, journal, book, or article) that supports some aspect of your point of view (your critique), be it pro or con relating to the documentary on COVID-19. You must intext cite this source at least once in the support paragraphs (body) of your essay.
Your essay must also have a Works Cited page that is the last page of your essay. See the MLA guides posted in the “Student Resources Module” in Canvas or visit Purdue OWL online for examples of intext and Works Cited citations.*
Conclude your essay with a strong conclusory paragraph that affirms your thesis statement, summarizes what you consider are your key support arguments, and provides a final perspective on the topic (call-to-action, appropriate quotation, future implications).
