Reading Journal Assignment
Purpose: This assignment is designed to help you identify cultural, economic, and political contexts that relate to our study of child and adolescent development. Reading current articles and exploring the ideas you are introduced to is one of the most important ways you can develop your knowledge of course material.
Skills: In this assignment you will have the opportunity to practice:
- purposeful exploration of course concepts
- summarizing information
- using critical thinking and reflection skills
- communicating your ideas in writing in a clear and organized manner
Knowledge: Through reading, analyzing and reflecting on a current article, you will develop a deeper knowledge of course concepts.
Task:
For each age group (see Canvas modules) do some research and choose a current (last six months) article that is of interest to you from the popular literature. Please choose full length articles online from legitimate sources such as the LA Times, NY Times, etc (not a blog). The articles you choose must be a minimum of 500 words in length and must have an obvious connection to course content.
- Read the article.
- Write a summary of the article (at least 100 words). Summaries should communicate the major points of the article, and how it relates to our course content. Please include the URL of the article.
- Write a reflection about the article (at least 100 words). Think about your personal reaction to the article – could you relate to it, or did the author have an identifiable bias, or was the article one-sided? Why did you choose this article? What did you learn?
