An elderly couple, Jose and Alicia de Santos, have both been diagnosed with mild dementia over the last 6 months. Jose is 86 years old, and Alicia is 84. They do not have any children. The only relative who lives near them is Alicia’s sister, Marci, who is 66 years of age; she has helped them with errands, and in so doing, has noticed that both of them appear increasingly more forgetful and unsteady on their feet. She has talked with them about moving into a Board and Care facility, but they do not want to move from their house, which they have lived in for over 40 years.

Please answer the following questions about this case study, in a 2 – 3 page paper, using the APA format and incorporating concepts , theories, and information from our readings and outside references:

1. Alicia has retained the services of a geriatric social worker in private practice near her home to help Jose and Alicia, who are aware of this and willing to meet with him. Alicia and the social worker are going to visit the couple next week and have “a family meeting.” What do you think the role of the social worker should be in this first meeting with them?

2. Let’s assume that part of the social worker’s assessment includes a need for “supportive couples work.” Given what you know about Jose and Alicia, what could be included in this type of intervention?

3. What types of resources do you think the social worker should provide Alicia and the couple?
