Paper Instructions
Research Proposal
Goal of the Assignment:
• To begin developing a working thesis statement on your chosen topic.
• To practice evaluating sources for credibility, bias, and identify the role of discourse
communities in the research process.
• To improve library skills and research methods
Instructions:
Step 1: Using your proposition, you will choose a question, issue or problem that you believe
requires more research before making a decision on how to vote (if you want to pick another
proposition, you can. However, since you have already done work to analyze the proposition for
Essay #1, you will find that it is probably easier to stick with the same one).
Step 2: You will write a structured research proposal that follows the template provided in these
instructions. Be sure to pay close attention to my directions, and read the example posted on the
assignment page before you start.
Essay Requirements:
1. Your essay will have 6 paragraphs and should be around 750-1000 words. The first
paragraph will be an introduction, and the other 5 will each discuss a source that you
have found on your topic. The sources should include a variety of perspectives, but the
most valuable sources will be those that are neutral and informative, rather than
containing opinion. The paragraph outline below explains exactly what you will include in
the introduction and source evaluation paragraphs.
2. You must submit your essay according to MLA formatting standards. If you are unsure
what this means, please see the MLA Formatting Guide at the bottom of the instruction
page on Canvas.
Requirements for Each Paragraph:
I. Introduction Paragraph:
The introduction will give a brief overview of the topic or issue you will be researching.
Please make sure that you answer the following questions in a well-organized, detailed
paragraph that includes a topic and concluding sentence as if it were the introduction to
your research paper.
a. What is the main research problem or debate that you wish to learn more about
in relation to your proposition?
b. What methods or approach should be used to analyze the research problem or
debate?
c. Why is this important research, what is its significance, and why should someone
reading the proposal care about the outcomes of the proposed study?
II. Citation & Source Evaluation (5 paragraphs: talk about 1 source per paragraph):
a. Citation entry at the top in bold (in the same format as a Works Cited entry)
b. Paragraph underneath the citation that contains the following information in
paragraph form:
i. Identify whether the source is primary, secondary or tertiary and explain
how this affects the source’s credibility.
ii. Evaluate the source’s credibility using the information we have covered
over the last couple weeks: consider the author’s credentials, proof of
expertise and experience; consider the company that published the source
and how their reputation or motives affect the source; ask whether the
source is recent enough to be used, ask whether there are biases present
that may affect the source’s trustworthiness, logical fallacies, etc.
