Please address the following:
Do the authors consider how colonialism and systemic racism act as determinants of Indigenous health? If so, how?
Suggested structure for your response paper:
Page 1: Summarize the news story. What is the aspect of Indigenous health that the news story describes? Does the news story give social, political and historical context?
Page 2: Do the authors consider how colonialism and systemic racism act as determinants of Indigenous health and/or as root causes of health inequities? If so, how? If not, what narrative of causation do the authors provide? (If the news story does not refer to structural determinants of health, it might be attributing health inequities to “lifestyle choices” or carrying out other forms of victim-blaming, to name one example).
• Show that you understand how colonialism and systemic racism act as determinants of Indigenous health by referring to at least two assigned readings (for example, Billie Allan and Janet Smylie’s report, Charlotte Reading’s chapter, or Margo Greenwood et al.’s Introduction chapter).
Page 3: Make an intervention! How would the ‘message’ about the causes of health inequities getting across to the audience change if the authors had used addressed how colonialism and systemic racism act as determinants of Indigenous health? How would you write the news piece differently?
