Informative Media Project Assignment
1. Select a disability as described in this class. Here is a list of topics. Preview the document
2. Research** this exceptionality. What is it – define How does it manifest itself in school? What are the characteristics associated with it? What are the implications for a student with this exceptionality in school? What needs might this student have during the school day? You must have at least 6 research resources (peer-reviewed journal articles, books) in your References. (Your text may be ONE of them). You MUST use citations, e.g. “(Smith, 2013)” in APA style so we know what information came from which source. If you are doing a brochure and have limited space in your project, you may use footnotes. The library can help you with getting started on this research and citing information properly.
3. Develop (from your resources) TEN strategies or methods for including this student successfully in a general education setting. The methods or strategies you share must include both academic AND social. If you are an education major, you may certainly make this apply to your own field of study such as Music Education, AYA Science, Early Childhood, etc.
What is a strategy?
This is NOT a strategy: “Communicate with parents. They know their child best.” Behavior like this is expected of every teacher.
This IS a strategy: “Use social stories to support positive behavior in students with autism. Social stories are…” Include specifics about what the strategy is and how and where you might use this strategy.
(Are you thinking, “I don’t know anything about such strategies! How would I know what to recommend?” The answer to this question is “ RESEARCH ”)
4. Provide AND ANNOTATE at least five websites that provide more information, strategies, materials and/or resources for the reader. An annotation is a brief summary or outline of information available on the site, including any particular hints for navigating the site. Sources must be legitimate, reliable and useful! These sites must relate directly to the disability or condition, instead of a site that covers multiple disability areas, e.g. HelpGuide or WebMD. BE CAREFUL of websites that seem to be personal or that originate out of the country, are selling products, and/or may not be useful to parents or teachers in the U.S. The library can help you decide which websites are appropriate for this project.
5. Organize all of this information, including characteristics, definition, implications, strategies, websites, and your references in an interesting, attractive and professional format. No matter what format you choose, you must provide a complete list of References, including all of your books, articles, and websites, in APA or MLA format. You may do this at the end of a powerpoint or movie presentation or on the back of your paper version or on a separate piece of paper with your name on it.
