First Assignment
In this exercise, you will examine the eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia
nervosa, including the symptoms, treatment options, and latest re- search findings
that are unlocking the mysteries of these disorders. You will also be introduced to the
Web sites for the National Institute of Mental Health
https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/eating-disorders/index.shtml
(Links to an external site.)
and the American Psychological Association (http://www.apa.org/topics/eating/
(Links to an external site.)
). Do not limit your exploration to these sites, however; rather, use them as starting
points in your investigation to find answers to the following questions.
1. Briefly summarize the online diagnosis criteria for either anorexia nervosa
or bulimia nervosa. (at least 200 words for each question)
2. Given the many developmental contexts of anorexia nervosa and bulimia
nervosa, treatment must focus on the biosocial, cognitive, and
psychosocial roots of these disorders. Briefly describe the treatment
options available for either anorexia or bulimia. Which have proven to be
most effective? (at least 200 words for each question)
Second Assignment
By age 14 or so adolescents become more capable of deductive reasoning, or
top-down reasoning, which begins with an abstract idea or premise and then uses
logic to draw specific conclusions. By contrast, inductive reasoning, or bottom-up
reasoning, predominates during the school years, as children accumulate facts and
experiences (the knowledge base) to aid their thinking.
To practice identifying these forms of reasoning, indicate whether the following
statements represent inductive or deductive reasoning.
1. If Juan was voted class president, his peers must respect him and believe
that he has leadership skills. (Inductive or deductive?)
2. Haley believes that the city curfew for adolescents is unfair because she
considers adolescents to be as responsible as adults and adults create
problems just as often as adolescents. (Inductive or deductive?)
3. Rachel knows all students in tenth grade take a standardized test. She is
going to be in tenth grade next year so she knows that she will be taking
the standardized test. (Inductive or deductive?)
4. In social class, Charles was learning about discrimination. He went home
and told his parents that he cannot understand how people can
discriminate, because people are the same and deserve equal rights.
(Inductive or deductive?)
5. Lindsey is shopping for a birthday gift for her friend. She knows that her
friend likes the color blue and loves sweaters. Lindsey finds a blue
sweater and buys it for her friend’s birthday. (Inductive or deductive?)
