Inter-professional Change Project Paper Overview and Outline
This assignment provides an opportunity to demonstrate your basic understanding of how to undertake a Change Project in preparation for the Capstone course. You will want to refer to Units 3 & 4 in your EBP text as you proceed through this assignment. Capstone requires a similar format, albeit weighted and graded entirely differently. This course is designed to help
build your confidence and facilitate your Capstone success.
Through development of your PICOT question and literature searches in your Translational Science course(s), you identified a needed practice change. This semester you expanded or refined your literature search in preparation for DB 3.
You may already have 5 or 6 strong articles on your Evidence Tables (ET) from TS 2. For this paper, your goal is to have 6 articles identified and summarized on your ET that present consistent evidence which will support your change project regarding your chosen topic.
Depending on when you took TS 2, you may not have come into this class with your full complement of 6 articles. Regardless of how many articles you began the semester with, you all should have run an updated literature search for DB 3 to make certain you have the best available, most timely evidence. Imagine sitting in a Boardroom with the CNO and CEO of your organization and wondering if the literature you’re about to present is truly up to date…..SO
MOTIVATING!!
The RCA and GAO forms are available in Canvas in the Getting Started Module under Course
Resources to assist you in appraising new articles. You do not need to turn them in; they are for your use as you decide whether new articles are worthwhile or not. You’ll want to keep them in a digital file in case you need to produce them for capstone. Although you will not submit RCA/GAO sets, your Evaluation Table WILL be required as an Appendix to this paper.
Created in APA 7 th format, you will describe in your papers the process of an inter-professional Change Project that is based on your cumulative review of the literature thus far. Use the outline below to create the major headings for your paper. To appropriately address all the requirements, your paper will be a MAXIMUM of 6 pages of text—this excludes the Title page,References, and Appendix. Five points will be deducted from your score on the Writing criterion section for papers exceeding 6 pages in length. Content beyond page 6 will not be graded;
therefore, any content on page 7 and beyond will earn 0 points.
For this assignment, the Review of Literature and corresponding Evaluation Table are weighted heavily because the necessary investment of time to create those elements is considerable. We
want you to be very familiar with the process of reviewing and synthesizing the literature. The experience gained through this process should enhance your understanding that scholarly literature provides the foundation for evidence-based change. Please remember you are NOT planning to do research; you ARE planning EVIDENCE-BASED CHANGE. In your Capstone
course, you will focus more on the implementation and evaluation processes.
Get off to a great start by using the UT Tyler SON Title Page Template located in the Start Here Module under Course Resources. You can find the Evaluation Table template there as well.
Change Project Paper Outline (Initial Draft & Final)/Grading Rubric
This paper should be written in third person.
I. Title Page
II. Introduction
Include your properly worded PICOT question consistent with the templates
provided in your EBP text. Be sure to incorporate prior faculty feedback from DB 3.
Begin the Introduction under the Title, without a heading–consult APA resources as needed. (Title page + Introduction = 5%)
III. Background and Significance
Explain why your identified topic is important. What will the continuing
consequences be if evidence-based change is not implemented? Think in terms of health outcomes and/or organizational/systems issues (population statistics, liabilities, costs, etc.). Use scholarly research to support your case. Use a minimum of 3 citations/references. PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE NOT YOUR EBP ARTICLES. If you possess specific data about your site that illustrates the issue and you are free to discuss those data, briefly share it here. (10%)
IV. Review of Literature
Following your recent literature search and subsequent appraisal of articles,
choose your 6 articles with the strongest evidence and populate your ET. If you have more than 6 articles you may certainly include them on your ET as well. Remember your ET is for those articles that clearly provide CONSISTENT evidence for
change. They are not the articles that provide background and significance on your topic. (You would have already discussed those in the above section. You need to keep those background and significance related articles conveniently accessible in a digital file for this course and your future capstone work.)
UPOAD THE PDFs of articles that are on your ET and discussed in this Review
of Literature section under the separate assignment tab, “Submit PDFs of ET
Articles.”
Craft a summary of your six best peer reviewed articles that clearly demonstrate research evidence to support your anticipated Change Project. In this Review of Literature section of the paper, you will discuss the identified studies in a scholarly manner. Challenge yourself to avoid naming the article, or writing “in=the/this article.” The use of APA citations will greatly help you adjust to this style of writing. Ideally you will have gathered a strong mix of evidence, that could include for example, a Randomized Control Trial (RCT), an EBP Project, or a Systematic Review, although this mix of article types is not necessarily a requirement. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO SHINE AS SCHOLARS. Strive to synthesize your literature findings instead of discussing them one at a time. Find the commonalities in the articles that pertain to your anticipated change project and cluster your citations. Organize your thoughts as if this document was going to be read by your most revered nursing leader. Remember that in scholarly writing, more is not necessarily better. The Evaluation Table will be submitted as an Appendix to your
paper.
Review of Lit (20%) + Evaluation Table with at least 6 articles (10%) + pdfs of
articles uploaded in other Assignment link (5%) = 35%
V. Overview of Change Project Process* (Weave in and cite at least two concepts from Unit 3 in your EBP text for section V. Additional external resources are welcomed.)
A. Planning (15%)
i. Describe the site where you anticipate the change will be carried out.
ii. What data will you need to build a case that change is warranted?
iii. Who are the stakeholders affected by this proposed change? Describe
opportunities for inter-professional involvement.
iv. From whom will you need permission? Who are the gatekeepers? Do you
have allies and or change champions in the organization who may assist
you?
v. What barriers do you foresee, and what ideas do you have for how to
eliminate or minimize the barriers?
vi. What resources are needed to enact the change? Consider the need for
personnel, training, supplies, consultants, software etc.
vii. Are there associated costs with bringing this change to your organization?
Will there be ongoing costs for sustaining the change? If you have a dollar
estimate of the costs, include the estimate; however, actual numbers are
not required. You can discuss costs by categories, approximations, or
ranges. Discuss benefits vs. risks/costs analysis over time (for example, in
one year).
viii. With you as the change project leader, who will assist you in carrying out
the change?
B. Implementation (10%)
i. What are the major phases or steps of your implementation plan?
ii. What is the anticipated SPECIFIC timeline for these steps? You
may use bullets or a table to convey this component. (Anticipate
completion in 10-12 weeks given the semester length.)
C. Evaluation (5%)
i. What data will you need to reflect outcomes to determine if the
change was successful?
ii. How do you plan to evaluate the PROCESS of change?
iii. If the change project can’t be enacted for some reason, what other
steps could you take in the organization to facilitate some positive
impact on this topic?
VI. EBP Change Model (5%)
Select a Model from Chapter 13 in your EBP text. Do NOT summarize it, but
name it, provide the citation, then staying in third person writing style, provide
rationale for why you think it is the optimal model to guide your change project.
(Review how to cite chapters in a text.)
VII. Conclusion (5%)
VIII. Writing/Grammar/Spelling/Page Limit/Reference Format, using APA 7
th edition
format for all (10%)
IX. References
X. Appendix – Evaluation Table
(Please note any significant violation of Academic Integrity as discussed in syllabus reflected within paper can result in a zero for the assignment.)
*It is understandable that some of you may be unsure of the site and specifics for your Capstone at present. DO NOT WORRY. This paper is to help you THINK ABOUT AND ANTICIPATE launching a change project. If you need to answer some of these questions with a bit of realistic creativity based on your insights and experiences, that is perfectly acceptable.
**Be sure to visit the Assignment: Collaborative Peer Review to familiarize
yourself with this associated course requirement and the corresponding rubric for how you will be graded for reviewing your peer. If you are unfamiliar with using Track Changes in Word, you can find instructions in the Mission Possible Canvas Organization/Writing Resources.
