The Midterm Essay Assignment
The 20th century saw unparalleled progress in almost every aspect of technology. Most of our modern conveniences were the direct result of scientific discoveriesand the technological innovations of this period. Your midterm essay will allow you to research topics from this era.No late essays will be accepted for any reason.
Assignment
Choose an area or industry of today’s society and write aminimum500 word,
5-paragraphessay on the following topic:“What 3 technological innovations have had the greatest impact on this areaof society in the last 100-200 years?”
Step 1.You may pick an area such as your major: law enforcement, allied health, etc. or you may decide to look at an aspect of society such as music, movies, sports etc.
Step 2.Then you must determine what the three most significant technological advances in the field/facet were and then gather information on them. For example, if you were to choose law enforcement as your area you might choose fingerprinting, two-way radios, and forensic DNA as your topics.
Step 3.After you have determined the area and the technologies that you will discuss you must submit all of this information to the discussion forum that I have createdby thedate, I have specified on Blackboard. Make sure that you include the three technologies and not just the area of society.
I will either approve your choices or suggest alternatives to help make your project more successful.Make sure you check back on the forum to see my comment on your submission.
If you miss the deadline for submitting your topics you must choose from the following topics. I will not accept topics that are emailed to me.
Area: Medical imaging
Topics: X-ray, ultrasound and MRI
or
Area: Communications
Topics: radio, television and Internet
Be aware that while your thoughts and ideas can be included in this paper, if you fail to do any research and learn about the topics that you have chosen and you write the paper only out of your own thoughts you will not get a good grade. While I am not requiring a documented research paper, you should include information from your research that supports your ideas.
Structure your essay in the following manner:
Introduction Paragraph Start with an overview of your topic and discuss it as your reader might see it today. Then tell your reader that you will discuss the technological advances that lead up to its modern state. Include a thesis that covers those areas that you will discuss. For example,“Space exploration would not be possible without advances in rockets, computers, and chemistry.”
Body Paragraphs In the body of the essay you will have one paragraph for each of the three areas that you have defined in your thesis. Discuss the need for, development of, and impact, both immediate and long term, of the technology.
Conclusion ParagraphTo end your essay you must “add up” all of the information that you have provided to give your reader an understanding of the impact of these technological advances on the area you have chosen. Do not repeat what you have said in the essay; instead, give your reader a broad picture of the current state of advancement based on what you discussed in the body.
Remember, all paragraphs must have a topic sentence that informs the reader of the main idea of the paragraph and then the rest of the paragraph gives supporting details only on that main idea. Also, if necessary do not forget to define any words specifically related to the technologies which are not commonly known.
